I established Gallery 482 in November 1985 as I was resigning my position
at Queensland University of Technology where I lectured in Art History,
Theory, as well as being, at various times, head of Visual Arts, coordinator
of Post Graduate Studies, part time curator of the art collection before
amalgamation with QUT.
The curatorial thrust of the gallery is to exhibit strong art in all
media, at reasonable prices. Art that speaks for itself rather art based
on post modern or other theories of the moment. During the nearly ten
years of operation, the gallery has gone through two expansions, and now
occupies the whole ground floor of the building it formerly shared with
another gallery.
The gallery regularly exhibits works on paper, etchings, lithographs
and photography. It draws its artists mainly from Queensland, but it balances
that representation with artists from interstate, and, occasionally from
overseas. The gallery has given a number of younger artists their first
exhibition, either in Brisbane, if they are not local, or in a commercial
gallery At the same time, the gallery exhibits well established artists.
